HVAC Advertising: Which Paid Channels Fit Your Shop

    hvac advertising

    The short version

    • Google Local Services Ads and Google search ads catch homeowners at the moment they need help, so they should get most of your paid budget.
    • Meta ads work best for maintenance plan offers, replacement promotions, and retargeting, and rarely for emergency repair.
    • Direct mail still pays for many HVAC shops when it targets older homes and past customers with a clear offer.
    • Radio and streaming TV (OTT) build name recognition in a market, but they only make sense once your search and local presence are solid.
    • Give every channel its own tracking number so you can judge it on booked jobs.

HVAC advertising comes down to matching the channel to what the customer needs right now. A homeowner with no AC in July isn’t scrolling Facebook. They’re searching Google and calling the first company that looks trustworthy. A homeowner with a 17-year-old system that still runs is a different buyer. They’ll respond to a financing offer in the mailbox or a replacement promotion on their phone. Spend your money where each type of customer is.

Below is every major paid option for HVAC companies, what each one costs in rough terms, and when it fits.

    Google Local Services Ads

LSAs show at the very top of Google with the “Google Guaranteed” badge. You pay per lead (a call or message), not per click, and you can dispute leads that don’t fit, like wrong service or outside your area.

When it fits: almost always, for residential HVAC. It’s the first paid channel most shops should turn on.

    • Typical cost per lead: roughly $25 to $90, depending on market and job type
    • Ranking depends on reviews, responsiveness, proximity, and whether you answer calls
    • You can’t write ad copy, so your reviews and profile do the selling
    • Answer every LSA call live. Missed calls hurt your ranking.

Our LSA management page explains how we set these up and handle disputes.

    Google search ads

Search ads sit just below LSAs and give you far more control: which services, which zip codes, which hours, how much to bid on each.

When it fits: once LSAs are running, or when you want to push higher-value work like replacements and new installs.

    • Split campaigns by repair, replacement, maintenance, and indoor air quality so budgets follow job value.
    • Expect cost per click from about $15 to $60 or more on competitive repair and replacement terms in larger metros.
    • Send clicks to service-specific landing pages with a click-to-call button and online booking.
    • Use call extensions and schedule ads around the hours your team can answer.
    • Add negative keywords (jobs, training, DIY, parts) from week one.

Performance Max campaigns can work for HVAC, but they hide a lot of the data. Start with standard search campaigns until you know your numbers. If you want help, see our Google Ads management service.

    Meta ads (Facebook and Instagram)

Meta ads reach people who aren’t searching yet. That makes them weak for emergency repair and useful for planned purchases.

    When it fits:

    • Selling maintenance plans before peak seasons
    • Replacement promotions with financing (for example, 0% for a set term or a rebate deadline)
    • Retargeting site visitors who didn’t book
    • Reaching past customers by uploading your customer list from ServiceTitan or Housecall Pro

Lead form ads on Meta produce cheap leads, but many of them are low intent. Call every one within five minutes and expect a lower close rate than search. Video of your techs and real installs usually beats stock images. Our Meta ads page covers how we run these.

    Direct mail

Direct mail sounds old-fashioned, but it still works for HVAC, especially for replacements. A postcard sits on the counter. A Facebook ad disappears in a second.

When it fits: targeting neighborhoods with older homes and systems, past customers due for service, or areas around a recent install.

    • Every Door Direct Mail (EDDM) through USPS is the cheapest way to blanket specific routes.
    • Targeted lists by home age, home value, or ownership cost more per piece but waste less.
    • “Neighbor mailers” sent to the 50 to 100 homes around a completed install often get strong response, because the truck was just on that street.
    • Use a clear offer, a deadline, and a unique phone number or QR code for tracking.

Expect all-in costs of roughly $0.40 to $1.00 per piece, depending on size, list, and volume. Mail in waves of three, a few weeks apart, rather than one big drop.

    Radio and streaming TV (OTT)

Radio, connected TV, and streaming audio build name recognition. When someone’s AC breaks, they’re more likely to call the name they’ve heard a hundred times.

When it fits: established shops with solid search presence and reviews, in markets where they can afford enough frequency to be remembered. A few spots a week won’t register.

    • Local radio packages often start around $2,000 to $5,000 a month in smaller markets and go far higher in big ones.
    • OTT (ads on streaming TV apps like Hulu or Roku) lets you target by zip code and household, often starting at a few thousand dollars a month.
    • Streaming audio (Spotify, iHeart, Pandora) is a cheaper way to test audio messaging.
    • Commit to at least six months. Brand advertising takes time to show up in branded searches and direct calls.

Measure it by watching branded Google searches, direct website traffic, and calls to a dedicated number. It’s harder to track than search, so go in knowing that.

    Choosing your HVAC advertising mix

Here’s how we’d usually stack HVAC advertising for a residential shop doing $2 million to $10 million a year:

    Priority Channel Main job
1 Local Services Ads Repair and service calls
2 Google search ads Replacement, install, and repair calls
3 Meta ads Maintenance plans, promotions, retargeting
4 Direct mail Replacements in older neighborhoods, past customers
5 Radio or OTT Name recognition in your market

Whatever you run, track it. Use a separate call tracking number for each channel through CallRail or CallTrackingMetrics, connect it to your field software, and report cost per booked job monthly. Our roundup of the best call tracking solutions compares options.

    FAQ

What’s the best advertising for HVAC companies?

For most residential shops, Google Local Services Ads and Google search ads produce the most booked jobs per dollar, because they reach people actively looking for service.

How much should an HVAC company spend on advertising?

Many shops put roughly 5% to 10% of revenue toward marketing, with paid advertising taking a large share. Set budgets by cost per booked job and what each job is worth.

Do Facebook ads work for HVAC?

They work for maintenance plans, promotions, and retargeting. They rarely work for emergency repairs, since people with a broken AC search Google instead.

Is radio advertising worth it for HVAC?

It can be for established shops with the budget to run it consistently for six months or more. It builds recognition rather than producing quick calls.
