In today’s digital landscape, audiences are hungry for clear, actionable, data-backed content that cuts through the noise of generic ads and fluffy blog posts. Data-driven storytelling is a great way to grab (and keep) people’s attention.
At Foxtown Marketing, we’ve seen firsthand how data storytelling (blending numbers, visuals, and insights into a compelling narrative) captures attention and drives engagement. By presenting data in a way that resonates emotionally, brands can connect with their audiences on a deeper level, turning raw numbers into meaningful stories that inspire action.
The Example: Retiring Abroad On $1M
Imagine you’ve saved $1 million for retirement. How long would that last if you moved abroad?
This question taps into a dream many US retirees share: Stretching their savings while enjoying a high quality of life in a new country. We analyzed the top 25 most popular countries for US retirees to answer this question, focusing on how long $1 million would last based on annual living costs.
Our methodology is straightforward: We estimated the annual cost of living for a retired couple in each country, covering essentials like housing, groceries, healthcare, utilities, transportation and miscellaneous expenses.
We then divided $1 million by this annual cost to calculate the duration in years. All costs are in U.S. dollars for consistency, and we excluded factors like inflation or investment returns to keep the analysis simple and focused. Importantly, this analysis does not include Social Security contributions, relying solely on the $1 million savings to reflect a conservative scenario.
Visualizing something as personal and impactful as retirement resonates emotionally with audiences. It’s not just about numbers. Data-driven storytelling speaks to people’s dreams of a secure, fulfilling life abroad, which makes this type of content incredibly engaging.
Methodology and Assumptions:
- Total Funds: $1 million in savings, with no Social Security income.
- Cost of Living: Annual living costs for a retired couple includes housing, groceries, healthcare, utilities, transportation, and miscellaneous expenses, consistent with standard general expense criteria.
- Calculation: For each country, we divided $1 million by the annual cost of living to determine how many years the savings will last.
- Currency: Costs are in US dollars (USD) for consistency.
- Notes: Costs reflect a moderate lifestyle and vary by location (urban vs. rural). Inflation, investment returns, and unexpected expenses are excluded for simplicity.

Summary and Insights:
- Shortest Duration: Australia and New Zealand (20 years), due to high living costs, similar to Hawaii’s 12 years, California’s 16 years and Massachusetts’ 19 years in the US.
- Longest Duration: Morocco (69 years), where the cost of living is lowest at $14,400/year.
- Moderate Duration: Countries like Mexico, Panama, Costa Rica, and Spain (33 years) offer a balance, while Thailand, Greece, and Uruguay (42 years) are more affordable.
- Social Security (for the Americans): Without Social Security, the duration of $1 million drops significantly. For example, in Mexico, it lasts 33 years (vs. 143 years with Social Security). In countries like the Philippines, it’s 56 years (vs. indefinite with Social Security). The smart way to do this calculation for yourself is to assume Social Security will be eliminated before you retire for financial planning purposes, and you’ll be pleasantly surprised if you’re wrong.
- Key Factors: Lower-cost countries in Latin America, Southeast Asia, and Africa stretch savings further. Higher-cost countries like Australia and New Zealand deplete funds faster. It’s just math.
